The new build primary school provides classrooms and facilities for 440 children. At the heart of the school is a top lit central area directly from the entrance designed as a gathering and meeting place. The structure of the building comprises steel and glulam frames with glulam ‘trees’ in the foyer and beams over the main hall incorporate passive roof ventilators. We provided all mechanical and electrical services including the design of the heating system, which is a sealed and pressurised system served by two gas-fired high efficiency modulating condensing boilers to produce low pressure hot water.
Wherever possible, the building is naturally ventilated, with the classroom modules naturally ventilated with automated low-level damper openings and high-level actuator driven windows, controlled by carbon dioxide sensors. The openings are controlled by the building management system (BMS) to provide cooling of the classrooms during night-time. The BMS provides control of boilers, hot water system, space heating, ventilation system, monitoring and alarm generation and pulse counting from utility meters. Utility data is then transferred to software-based energy analysis packages for monitoring consumption cost and energy management for the building.
