Built in 1776, Ely House is a five-floor Grade I listed building in Mayfair that was formerly the Bishop of Ely’s London residence. It houses the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac which specialises in contemporary art and showcases the careers of some of the most influential artists across its five historic gallery spaces.
The project provided a number of complexities, which required extensive coordination with a number of stakeholders including English Heritage and Westminster Council. We worked extensively with the client and the architect to ensure that the installation of all new building services would have minimum impact on the historic building, but also provided modern facilities required for a 21st century gallery.
The historic rooms are now reconnected by the restored promenade spaces and feature new hanging walls and cabinetry, allowing for concurrent programming of four shows as well as private viewing, offices and technical workspace. Both staircases have been restored, original chandeliers have been rehung and the central cupola has been uncovered.
