Portobello Square is the first phase of the regeneration of Wornington Green, an aging 1960s estate in Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The 324 new mixed tenure homes; 141 for private sale, 174 affordable and 9 for shared ownership follow a traditional street pattern and are built around a newly created London square.
We provided all mechanical and electrical services including an energy strategy designed to be flexible in its implementation. The homes are currently heated via a communal heating system served from onsite gas boilers. On completion of the second phase the communal heating system will be powered by a combined heat and power plant, providing an even more efficient system and allow waste to be converted into electricity. The overall scheme will provide 1,000 new homes, 3,000sqm of commercial space and 9,000sqm of public space.
The buildings have been designed with a thermally efficient building fabric throughout; brown roofs to a majority of properties promote biodiversity and attenuate rainfall, and underground water attenuation reduces the impact of stormwater on the development and prevent local flooding. The project achieves Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and Lifetime Homes requirements.
